Birthday Celebration at City Square.

City Square.jpg

I’m a big advocate of Birthdays. I think everyone should take a step back and let the people who love them, celebrate them. This may sound a bit conceited, however, everyone deserves this. Everyone deserves one day to set all of their problems aside and just enjoy a great night out with family and friends. Everyone deserves to be celebrated one day (or month) a year.

I have always loved my birthday. Every year I get older and every year I’m more proud of the relationships I’ve built and the family I have to support me. I have another year under my belt of good food, good drinks, and most of all good company. Anyone that thinks that shouldn’t be celebrated, is just wrong.

We always try to eat local and buy local.

Most of our special moment dinners are spent at City Square in Wooster Ohio. This restaurant never disappoints with the food. However, to me, what sets this restaurant apart is the service. We have all been to stuffy fine dining restaurants. We know that the waiters can properly open a bottle of wine and can repeat all the specials from memory. City Square is different. It provides a unique experience. It is “fine dining” but not stuffy. You don’t have to get out your best cocktail dress or 3 piece suit. You can relax in jeans, a nice shirt, or even a sweatshirt and get the same service. They will provide you, what I like to call, a comfortable fine dining experience.

So the company, … My Birthday Dinner was spent with my favorite people. My husband, son, and best friends. They spoiled me with gifts, sang me happy birthday when my dessert came out, and made me laugh out loud more than once.

So lets talk about City Square’s food. I want you to know that they are a steak house. My friends got steak, and of course I did not get a picture. I can assure you that their steak is delicious , but lets talk about the food my family got.

The Appetizers:

Pictured below from left to right is: Hand Breaded Mozzarella, Blackened Scallops, and City Square Lump Crab Cakes .

Let’s talk about each of these. The hand breaded mozzarella tasted fresh. They are breaded in house and they are served with a homemade marinara. The sauce was the perfect balance of bright, tangy, and sweet. I would definitely recommend this, especially if you bring a teenager along!

I technically don’t have a review for the blackened scallops. This was shared by my friends. They seemed to enjoy them!

The crab cakes were served with a house made tartar sauce. The greens were lightly dressed and the crab cakes had a perfect blend of herbs and seasoning. I love a crab cake that isn’t just all breading and lets the crab stand out. This appetizer didn’t disappoint.

The Entrees

Pictured: Ginger-Lime Scallops, Center Cut Filet Mignon with Parmesan Truffle French Fries, Tomahawk Pork Chop with House Garlic Mashed Potatoes.

I had the Ginger Lime Scallops. I have a confession to make. I almost always get the scallops at city square. They are perfectly cooked. They were seared on the outside but still soft and opaque in the middle. They were served over pea pods, carrots , and roasted tomatoes. The ginger lime compound butter was the perfect compliment to the dish. I would definitely recommend this dish.

My son always gets the same thing; filet Mignon, cooked medium and topped with caramelized onions. As always, it came out looking like perfection. It had a nice pink center and was evenly charred on the outside. For the side, he chose the Parmesan truffle fries. Every time he gets these I always make sure to grab a few. These fries are hands down my favorite fries.

My husband tried something new. He got the tomahawk pork chop with Demi Glace. I had a few bites and it was delicious. Honestly, it might be my new go to. It was cooked to a perfect medium and the Demi Glace put it over the edge. It was rich and full of wine flavor. He chose the house garlic mashed potatoes as a side. The pork with the Demi Glace and potato… WOW. That was a flavor bomb, and the perfect bite.

We of course had to also buy a bottle of wine. It was my birthday. Is it even an option to not get a bottle of wine? We went with the Four Graces Pinot Noir. It was smooth and fruity yet still had hints of black pepper and roasted coffee beans. It was a perfect compliment to our amazing meal.

The birthday celebration didn’t stop there! We walked around our beautiful downtown. We looked at lights and just took in all the beauty that downtown Wooster has to offer.

After our incredible dinner and exploring downtown, we ended up back at my house for a game night with our friends. I unfortunately lost every hand of Monopoly Deal, but you know what? It didn’t matter. I was celebrating my Birthday and I felt like a winner all night.
